Review: None But Jesus
John Flavel was a 17th century puritan preacher and writer. This small book consists of nearly 400 brief extracts from his works. It is a wonderful hors d’oeuvres—full of tasty titbits. To whet your appetite here are some quotes:
How soon would faith freeze without a cross? Bear your cross therefore with joy.
If I am the Lord’s, then my time, my talents, and all that I have are his.
Some providences, like Hebrew letters, must be read backwards.
Trails are the highway to assurance.
The law wounds, the gospel cures.
Here is a book to help you redeem your time. It is small enough to slip into your pocket and the quotes are brief enough to memorise.
I also hope that reading this book will encourage people to want to enjoy the main course and buy John Flavel’s books, many of which have been reprinted by the same publisher.
Highly recommended.
