Review: Indwelling Sin in Believers

First published 1667

This book is an exposition of Romans 7:21, ‘I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present within me.’ In essence this is a book to help Christians know themselves and their enemy.

The original was written by the great Puritan theologian John Owen and first published in 1667. John Owen is the hardest Puritan writer to read with complex sentences and long paragraphs. This edition is an abridged version with updated English. The result is a faithful but easy to read book. Even in this simplified form, it still provides a depth of teaching that is rarely seen in modern writing and preaching.

John Owen uncovers our deepest thoughts and motives and shows how indwelling sin affects everything the Christian does. He then shows us how, with God’s help, to guard our mind and heart against sin.

Reading this book will tell you why John Owen was a spiritual giant. The depth of his understanding of scripture and the human experience is simply astonishing. Banner of Truth have done a great service in bringing this important work to a wider audience.

However, through […]
