Category Book Reviews
Date January 29, 2008

This is the first in what we hope will be a regular feature in the ‘Articles’ section, where we will provide links to a selection of websites at which reviews of or comments on Banner of Truth titles have been posted. It should be noted that the views expressed are those of the respective bloggers. . .

For each title mentioned, a link is also provided to the appropriate page of the Banner online Bookstore, where orders can be placed.

Timmy Brister, a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, who has issued a ‘Puritan Challenge’ for 2008, based upon reading a selection from the Banner’s Puritan Paperback series during the year, has commented on three Richard Sibbes’ titles recently on his Provocations and Pantings blog:

Following a biographical sketch of Sibbes, he provides an outline of the seven volumes of The Works of Richard Sibbes. His ‘book of the month’ for January is The Bruised Reed. Brief comments are also given on Sibbes’ Glorious Freedom.

Another Puritan Paperback title, John Owen’s The Mortification of Sin, is commented upon by Pastor Caleb Burnison (Twinbrook Community Church, Rockville, Maryland) on his Upside Down Youth blog. He also has devotional observations (here) following his reading of The Bruised Reed and is enthusiastic (here) about the recently published gift edition of Samuel Rutherford’s The Loveliness of Christ.

Tyler Sultze (also studying at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary), states on his Heart of Ezra blog that Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ Raising Children God’s Way is ‘a must read for any parent’.

It is a few years since Iain Murray’s Wesley and Men who Followed was first published, but ‘Irish Calvinist’ Erik Raymond (involved in a church planting ministry with Omaha Bible Church) has recently reviewed this title on his blog (here).
