‘This is a work that will serve the church permanently in helping readers “to know”, whether much better or for the first time, “the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge”. I commend it most highly.’ — RICHARD B. GAFFIN, JR.

Knowing Christ is a majestic gem. Its author takes the reader by a loving pastoral hand into depths and riches, exhorting us to know Christ better and to love him more.’ — ROSARIA BUTTERFIELD

Book Description

From the foreword by J.I. Packer:
The Puritans loved the Bible, and dug into it in depth. Also, they loved the Lord Jesus, who is of course the Bible’s focal figure; they circled round him, centred on him, studied minutely all that Scripture had to say about him, and constantly, conscientiously, exalted him in their preaching, praises, and prayers. Mark Jones, an established expert on many aspects of Puritan thought, also loves the Bible and its Christ, and the Puritans as expositors of both; and out of this triune love he has written a memorable unpacking of the truth about the Saviour according to the classic Reformed tradition, and the Puritans supremely. Knowing Christ is a book calculated to enrich our twenty-first-century souls, and one that it is an honour to introduce.

I’ve spent nearly a year now walking through this book with a group of men from the College Ministry I pastor. Each week, we meet for dinner and to discuss a chapter of the book. This has been both transformative and rewarding. Jones has the ability to capture complex and rich theological truths in language that is both understandable yet profound. He has certainly taken a page from many of the greats who do not simply say true things, but say true things beautifully.

The short and concise nature of the chapters makes this book entirely readable, while the breadth of Jones knowledge and scholarship makes each chapter worth a second or third look. Though it is clearly written with a devotional quality, I found that the book shines especially in group discussions. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Great book – 27 short crisp chapters looking at various aspects of Christ’s life.

I have many passages highlighted that made me want to get on my knees and thank God for who Jesus is and all that Jesus has done for me.

Devotional and heart-warming, but not quite as effervescent as Mike Reeves’ “Rejoicing in Christ”. Jones covers a vast array of theology in a brief space, and does it without it being overly heavy. He also introduces the reader to an army of Puritan giants, whets the appetite to read more by them.

A book to read to stir your affections for your Saviour.

One disagreement – on p99 he says that “like our Saviour we must never ask for more than that which God has promised. In fact, faith without a promise amounts to audacity”. I’m not sure this is true of Christ, or pastorally helpful. Jesus asked “that this cup might be taken from him”, something clearly not promised to him. Jesus tells us to ask for “whatever” (John 15:7, cf Matt 7:7, 21:22) and John for “anything” (1 John 3:21). Paul tells us to to pray about everything, presenting your requests to God (Phil 4). The key attitude is trust that our Father knows best.

Apart from that – a lovely book, read with great profit. I will go back and read this regularly, and use my highlights as fuel for prayer.

Knowing Christ by Mark Jones is one of those books that changes your life. Dr. Jones has a way of explaining topics in ways that I can not only understand, but he also pushes me to worship Christ in deeper ways. I’ve read this book multiple times- so has my husband. We’ve had to buy multiple copies because the binding get worn down. I’ve also walked through this book chapter by chapter with around 10 women in our church, and we learned so much about Jesus. I definitely recommend going through the content in a small group- it adds so much. Thank you, Dr. Jones, for pointing us to Christ in gentle and profound ways.

This book will be a classic right alongside of J.I. Packer’s Knowing God. I found myself having to put the book down many times to go to the scripture references and make notes in my Bible and then meditate upon what I just read. This book is rich, and I am sure will be just as rich on subsequent reads.
