I recently sang the famous hymn Tell me the old, old story<\/em> written by the Clapham Sect poetess Arabella Katherine Hankey (1836-1911) and it struck me that what she says there ought to be in the mind of every faithful preacher as he preaches.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    Stick to the main thing<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the old, old story
    \n\t\t\tof unseen things above,
    \n\t\t\tof Jesus and his glory,
    \n\t\t\tof Jesus and his love<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    We want it to be fresh and relevant but not new and not earthbound – just the good old gospel and how to get \t\tto heaven. Tell them about Jesus – that’s what they need to hear.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Keep it simple, stupid<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the story simply,
    \n\t\t\tas to a little child,
    \n\t\t\tfor I am weak and weary
    \n\t\t\tand helpless and defiled.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Don’t try to be clever or expect too much. You’re dealing with weak and weary and wanderers who need help.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Easy does it<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the story slowly,
    \n\t\t\tthat I may take it in,
    \n\t\t\tthat wonderful redemption,
    \n\t\t\tGod’s remedy for sin.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Don’t be in a rush and don’t assume things. Patiently explain it all – the whole plan of redemption and how \t\t\tsinners are saved.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Let’s go through that again<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the story often
    \n\t\t\tfor I forget so soon;
    \n\t\t\tthe early dew of morning
    \n\t\t\thas passed away at noon.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Be subtle but don’t be afraid of repetition. You’d be surprised how quickly people forget things. And don’t be \t\tafraid of repetition. It’s amazing how quickly people forget things!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    This is serious<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the story softly,
    \n\t\twith earnest tones and grave;
    \n\t\tremember I’m the sinner
    \n\t\twhom Jesus came to save.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Don’t be flippant or uncaring. There is seldom need to shout. Seek to be filled with compassion. Be earnest. \t\tLove them. Take it seriously.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    What they really need<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the story always,
    \n\t\t\tif you would really be,
    \n\t\t\tin any time of trouble,
    \n\t\t\ta comforter to me.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Never forget that what they need more than anything else is not your pop psychology or the latest cliches but \t\tthe gospel. Whatever their particular trouble, the answer is found ultimately in the gospel, the good news of \t\t\tJesus Christ.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    The ministry of warning<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Tell me the old, old story
    \n\t\t\twhen you have cause to fear
    \n\t\t\tthat this world’s empty glory
    \n\t\t\tis costing me too dear.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    A warning note needs to be sounded for some. A gospel call implies a call to leave the world and its \t\t\t\tsupposed charms. Don’t be afraid to be negative where necessary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    With an eye on the goal ahead<\/h3>\n
    \n

    Yes, and when that world’s glory
    \n\t\t\tis dawning on my soul,
    \n\t\t\ttell me the old, old story:
    \n\t\t\t‘Christ Jesus makes thee whole.’<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Death is a fearful thing even for the Christian, and the people you are speaking to will all have to face it \t\tone day, some sooner than others. In death, as much as in life, what they really need to face the final enemy is \t\tthe same gospel that they needed in life. Preach conscious of that fact.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
