Bill Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0was raised in Liverpool and served a number of churches in England, Scotland and Florida. He has now retired from pastoring one congregation, but continues to preach extensively.<\/p>\n

Alec Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>had a long ministry in Birmingham. He has now retired and worships in Bradford on Avon. He has for many years published a widely used series of daily Bible Notes.<\/p>\n

Robert Letham\u00a0<\/strong>is the Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at Union School of Theology, Bridgend.<\/p>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Seven Leaders\u00a0<\/em>(Iain Murray) and\u00a0The Life of John Milne of Perth\u00a0<\/em>(Horatius Bonar)<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>A Wind in the House of Islam\u00a0<\/em>by David Garrison , How God is drawing Muslims around the world to faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Richard A. Muller,\u00a0Divine Will and Human Choice: Freedom, Contingency, and Necessity in Early Modern Reformed Thought.<\/em> Baker Academic, 2017. It’s supposed to be a seminal work.<\/p>\n

The book that changed my life…<\/h3>\n

B.H:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Authority\u00a0<\/em>(Dr Lloyd-Jones).\u00a0The Revival Year Sermons of C.H. Spurgeon.<\/em><\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>The Sovereignty of God\u00a0<\/em>by A.W. Pink , This book transformed my understanding of theology when I was questioning my Pentecostalism and brought me to the reformed faith.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>The Bible , <\/em>literally, I’m not entering it for the sake of it! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

The book I wish I had written…<\/h3>\n

B.H: <\/strong>G<\/em>eorge Whitefield,<\/em>\u00a0Arnold Dallimore.<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>Eternity\u00a0<\/em>, the lives of two men wonderfully transformed by the grace of God to whom the word ‘eternity’ meant so much. , Robert Annan, a hero of Dundee, and Arthur Stace of Sydney, Australia. If God spares me, I may yet write it.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Nothing so far , if there’s one I’ll try to write it, since I’ve been writing books since the age of nine (various kinds of books of course, starting with WW2 fighter pilot thrillers, imaginary Test series between England and Australia, and Foreign Legionnaires, stranded in the Sahara, being eaten by hyenas).<\/p>\n

The book that helped me in my preaching…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Studies in Sermons on the Mount\u00a0<\/em>(Dr. Lloyd Jones).<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>An Earnest Ministry\u00a0<\/em>, The Want of the Times\u00a0<\/em>by John Angell James.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Again, the Bible pre-eminently, and hearing a range of very good preachers (Stott, Lloyd-Jones, Peter Lewis, Erroll Hulse). If I was pushed I would refer to some lectures by John Stott at the TSF conference in January 1969 and to probably one of the few books that I’ve read on preaching, by Lloyd-Jones,\u00a0Preaching and Preachers.<\/em><\/p>\n

The book I think is most underrated…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Archibald G. Brown\u00a0<\/em>(Iain Murray).<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Many.<\/p>\n

The book that made me say ‘amen’ as I read…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Power Through Prayer\u00a0<\/em>by E.M. Bounds.<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>The Sermon on the Mount<\/em> by Dr. D.M. Lloyd-Jones.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>I don’t say Amens when I turn the pages but I get the idea , T.F. Torrance, Space, Time and Resurrection.\u00a0<\/em>The chapter on ascension was breathtakingly good.<\/p>\n

The last book that made me weep…<\/h3>\n

B.H:<\/strong>\u00a0Rab and His Friends\u00a0<\/em>(John Brown)<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Trapped in Hitler’s Hell\u00a0<\/em>by Anita Dittman , The suffering and survival of a Jewish Christian teenager and her mother in Nazi Labour camps. This was particularly poignant as I had visited Aushwitz-Birkenau 18 months ago and was deeply moved and horrified by the suffering of Poles and Jews in that extermination centre.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>None. I was inclined facetiously to say Wittgenstein,\u00a0Philosophical Investigations<\/em>! No, I’m not a touchy-feely weepy kind of guy, less the emotional kind. I might be tempted to weep for music , \u00a0Mahler Das Lied von der Erde<\/em>, Shostakovich’s\u00a0String Quartet No.8,\u00a0<\/em>Schubert’s\u00a0Quintet D. 863<\/em>, Beethoven’s\u00a0Quartet Op 130<\/em> (the cavatina movement).<\/p>\n

The book I am most ashamed not to have read…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Confessions of Augustine.<\/em><\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong> I haven’t thought of it that way. I suppose Augustine’s\u00a0City of God<\/em>, into which I have dipped but not read thoroughly. But by mentioning it, it means I am not ashamed about it.<\/p>\n

The book I most often give to new members and young Christians…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Knowing God,\u00a0<\/em>J.I. Packer.\u00a0Expository Thoughts\u00a0on the Gospels<\/em> by J. C. Ryle.<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>I use my own specially prepared literature and then go on to comment John Blanchard’s books, e.g.\u00a0Why Are You Here?\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Does God Believe in Atheists<\/em>?<\/em><\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Calvin Cummings,\u00a0Confessing Christ<\/em>. He was an Orthodox Presbyterian minister.<\/p>\n

The book I give to people thinking about becoming a Christian…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>All of Grace\u00a0<\/em>(C.H. Spurgeon)<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>Ultimate Questions\u00a0<\/em>by John Blanchard and my own literature.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>It depends on the person, their background and interests , at the very basic level, John Blanchard’s\u00a0Ultimate Questions\u00a0<\/em>(I arranged for my deacons, who were very active in mercy ministry, to hand out copies when they were involved with people outside the congregation who were in need, alongside the material assistance they gave. But these were people who were not necessarily thinking about becoming Christians). It could be anything from John Stott’s\u00a0Basic\u00a0<\/em>Christianity<\/i>\u00a0to, more obliquely, Herbert Butterfield and latterly Jonathan Hill on the contribution of Christianity to civilization. These days few people read more than 140 characters.<\/p>\n

The book I wish I was able to write and wish someone would…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>A modern biography of Captain Allen Gardiner of Patagonia.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>Does anyone think that a modern day book on Christianity and the Political Order is needed?<\/p>\n

The best book for children…<\/h3>\n

B.H:\u00a0<\/strong>Leading Little Ones to God\u00a0<\/em>(Marian M Schoolland) and\u00a0The Child’s Story Bible<\/em> by Catherine Vos.<\/p>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>The Child’s Story Bible\u00a0<\/em>by Catherine Vos.<\/p>\n

R.L:\u00a0<\/strong>I doubt whether anything could be better than the one my own children read, Marian Schoolland’s\u00a0Leading Little Ones to God.<\/em><\/p>\n

Other final comments…<\/h3>\n

A.T:\u00a0<\/strong>I often return to books that I first read 30 or 40 years ago. The books of many authors have played a great part in my life and ministry, particularly those of Iain Murray and Stuart Olyott.
\nThere are church history books; biographies by Iain Murray, e.g.\u00a0Spurgeon: Early Years, Full Harvest<\/em>; Arnold Dallimore’s\u00a0 biography of George Whitefield,\u00a0Life of David Brainerd.
\n<\/em>I love the Old Testament Bible commentaries by John Currid, Dale Ralph Davis, and Iain Duguid. New Testament commentaries of William Hendrikson and the series by Dr Lloyd-Jones on\u00a0Romans<\/em> and\u00a0Ephesians.\u00a0<\/em>Where do I stop? I am so thankful for the wealth of literature that we have in English. We owe so much to Banner of Truth.<\/p>\n
