They help explain why the writings of\u00a0J C Ryle have such an enduring value. But they are\u00a0not the main reason why I, and so many others,\u00a0find his books so beneficial.<\/p>\n
Ryle tackles controversial issues in some of articles and\u00a0tracts. He did so because he knew that the issues of his\u00a0day had to be addressed. The honour of Christ, the\u00a0well-being of his church, and the salvation of individuals,\u00a0these are what motivated him.<\/p>\n
That is why he published what have proved to be some\u00a0of the finest Christian biographies available to us. And\u00a0that is why so many of his sermons and addresses have been\u00a0collected together in print.<\/p>\n
What emerges as you read his books is that he was\u00a0a preacher, a man with a message. His message had as it\u00a0centre the amazing grace of God.<\/p>\n
He worked hard to arrest the attention of his readers\u00a0and hearers, to address their needs, and to applying the\u00a0timeless authoritative Word of God to their consciences.\u00a0Hence he is always economic in his use of words. Each\u00a0clause, sentence, and paragraph is carefully crafted to\u00a0have a maximum impact.<\/p>\n
Ryle leads you to Christ. He wants God\u2019s truth to be\u00a0heard and received. He wants unbelievers to believe,\u00a0and for believers to be faithful. He learned during his years\u00a0of Christian service that, after the Bible, the Puritans\u00a0provide some of the best teaching available to us on\u00a0living the Christian life. Dr Lloyd-Jones is right.
