Anne Ross Cousin is best known as the authoress of the hymn, The sands of time are sinking<\/em>. Its nineteen verses (in its original form) are based on the death-bed sayings of a remarkable seventeenth century Scottish preacher, Samuel Rutherford. What is not so well known is that Anne Ross Cousin put into verse some of the death-bed sayings of a Scotsman who died nearly a century earlier, the great Reformer John Knox. Readers who have access to a biography which records the things Knox said in his final days (such as the one by Thomas M\u2018Crie) will be struck by the accuracy of Mrs. Cousin\u2019s rendering. The poem is long (fully thirty-five verses!) but well worth the time it takes to read.<\/p>\n

THE DEATH-BED OF JOHN KNOX<\/strong><\/p>\n

He has come down the pulpit stair,
\nCreeps slow along the street;
\nAnd eager groups are gathered there,
\nThe care-bent man to greet.<\/p>\n

And loving eyes look fond farewell
\nOn him they\u2019ll see no more;
\nAnd boding hearts in fear foretell,
\n\u201cJohn Knox\u2019s work is o\u2019er\u201d.<\/p>\n

He has gone up into his bed,
\nTo rest him and to die;
\nHe layeth down his fainting head,
\nAnd lifts his soul on high.<\/p>\n

He who ne\u2019er feared the face of man,
\nBefore his God lies low;
\nHe who fought sternest in the van
\nBreathes sacred quiet now.<\/p>\n

He lieth in a solemn calm;
\nNo sound is near him heard,
\nSave voice of prayer and holy psalm,
\nAnd of the blessed Word.<\/p>\n

But list! He speaks. \u201cThe hour is near
\nThat I have sighed to see;
\nHave prayed with many a groan and tear,
\nMight shortly come to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSore weary of the world am I,
\nAnd thirsting to depart;
\nNow God doth end my misery,
\nAnd comforteth my heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cThou know\u2019st, Lord, what my wars have been,
\nWhat burdens I have borne;
\nThou know\u2019st the sorrows I have seen,
\nHow weak I am and worn.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kept my watch on Zion\u2019s wall.
\nAnd to my trust was true;
\nThou bidst me lift the trumpet\u2019s call,
\nAnd a loud blast I blew.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen have miscalled me harsh and stern,
\nA man of war and strife:
\nThey knew not how I sighed to turn
\nFrom that sore troubled life;<\/p>\n

\u201cHow I had loved to serve my Lord,
\nFar from the battle\u2019s shock,
\nA faithful preacher of His Word
\nAnd pastor of His flock.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat time I rained on evil men
\nGod\u2019s threats, like burning coals,
\nAlbeit I loathed their sins, e\u2019en then
\nFull well I loved their souls.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in yon galley, fevered, chained
\nBeside the slavish oar,
\nOne fervent hope my soul retained,
\nHere to preach Christ once more.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe long thirst of my sorrowing heart
\nMight never be allayed
\nTill this bruised land, through every part,
\nChrist\u2019s name had fragrant made.<\/p>\n

\u201cI leave with Him \u2013 her Head and Lord \u2013
\nHis precious chosen spouse,
\nTo keep her faithful in His Word,
\nTrue to her covenant vows.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll \u2018neath the sun is toil and irk \u2013
\nIs vanity and loss;
\nNought is abiding save Christ\u2019s Kirk
\nFighting beneath the Cross.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast night for her I wrestled long \u2013
\nI wrestled and prevailed;
\nShe shall be built \u2013 stand fair and strong,
\nBy whomso\u2019er assailed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Eternal, our own God shall rise,
\nAnd this long warfare close;
\nShall wipe the tears from His saints\u2019 eyes,
\nAnd give them sure repose.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy meditation was most sweet
\nIn the mid-watch last night;
\nMy glad soul did its glory greet,
\nAnd well-nigh walked by sight.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! I have tasted and possessed \u2013
\nDrunk pleasures with the Lamb \u2013
\nHave reigned within my heavenly rest,
\nWhere even now I am.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeath has no victory \u2013 no sting \u2013
\nThanks be to Christ the Lord!
\nO salutary solacing!
\nO comfortable word!<\/p>\n

\u201cI take good night of all the saints
\nIn both these realms that be;
\nMy<\/em> flesh beneath its burden faints;
\nLet them<\/em> toil after me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith my dead hand, yet gladsome heart,
\nI hail them to the fight;
\nBid them lift up when I depart,
\nThe pure Evangel\u2019s light.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow read the Mediator\u2019s prayer1<\/a><\/sup>John 17<\/span> \u2013
\nGreat utterance of His will;
\nI cast my soul\u2019s first anchor there,
\nAnd it is steadfast still.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sleeps; but mark, a troubled sleep;
\nFor, ever and anon,
\nThere comes a sigh \u2013 heart-drawn and deep \u2013
\nThere comes a heavy groan.<\/p>\n

It is a sleep disturbed \u2013 oppressed \u2013
\nBy some dim anguish moved \u2013
\nNot like the tranquil child-like sleep
\nGod gives to His beloved.<\/p>\n

He wakes; deep awe is in his eye,
\nBut peace is on his brow;
\nWhate\u2019er the ill that brooded nigh,
\nIts spell is broken now.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfttimes\u201d, he sighs, \u201cin this frail life,
\nHath Satan tempted me;
\nAnd oft it was a deadly strife
\nEre he was forced to flee.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut now \u2013 O serpent subtilty!
\nO coil of cunning lies!
\nHe tempted me to think that I
\nHad merited the prize;<\/p>\n

\u201cThat I had earned a conqueror\u2019s place \u2013
\nA palm \u2013 a crown \u2013 a throne \u2013
\nNot by the gift of God\u2019s free grace,
\nBut deeds that I had done.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! but mine ancient enemy
\nHad well-nigh won the field,
\nTill the last dart that he let fly
\nI quenched upon my shield.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then I drew the Spirit\u2019s sword \u2013
\n\u2018The grace of God, not I\u2019;
\nAnd from that quick and piercing word
\nThe vanquished fiend did fly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd now, I know, without more pain,
\nOr anguish of the mind,
\nThe fair deliverance I shall gain \u2013
\nThe abundant entrance find.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll hail, sweet rest and free reward!
\nYet \u2013 hear my latest breath! \u2013
\nLive \u2013 live in Christ and serve the Lord,
\nAnd ne\u2019er need flesh fear death\u201d.<\/p>\n

E\u2019en now the sight fails from his eyes,
\nAnd now \u2018tis come at last!
\nWith lifted hand \u2013 with two deep sighs,
\nThat kingly soul hath passed.<\/p>\n
