Review: Worship – Its Priority, Principles and Practice

Public worship is one of the areas where there is great confusion today. This little booklet by J. C. Ryle the Victorian Church of England minister and author brings much needed biblical thinking to the subject. He answers some basic questions such as: Why is it important for men and women to worship God? What are the key principles of public worship? What are the essential elements in public worship?

As always Bishop Ryle is a model of clarity and direct speaking: you cannot fail to understand what he is saying. He shows us from the scriptures that public worship must be centred on God, mediated through Jesus Christ, reverent and from the heart. He then goes on to outline that New Testament worship consists of preaching, praying, praising and the two sacraments of communion and baptism.

Of course this booklet does not deal with some of the modern day controversies such as the charismatic gifts and the use of music in worship, but he lays a biblical foundation that would help you think through such issues as well. I highly recommend this to all Christians and especially to those who lead worship.
